How To NetBoot A VMWare Fusion & ESXi Hosted VM

Standard
VMWareFusion

For a number of years, OS X VMWare Fusion VM’s either hosted locally or on ESXi have supported NetBoot. Rich Trouton has covered this before here & here.

(Incidentally whilst this post refers to VMWare OS X VM’s, you can also NetBoot Parallels OS X VM’s & Kyle Bareis has a post on NetBooting VM’s created with that here.)

On occasion, the odd question still pops up on how to do this. So I’m posting this in the hope of rebroadcasting the message for any that have missed it.

Project Updates October 2015

Standard
Projects.001

So it’s been a busy few months, whilst I’ve generally been falling apart I’ve also been busy with various projects I own or am involved in & a side project to those has had a massive update.

As such, I felt it was a good time to quickly post an update on the goings on. Details below.

CoreTypes.bundle & icons for dialogs, scripts, slides, Self Service & Munki Managed Software Center

Screenshot 2015-10-17 15.36.00

For a number of years now I have used the icons found within the CoreTypes.bundle for dialogs, scripts, slides & Self Service.

I thought it was common practice to use them, but after a few conversations at JNUC2015 it appears I was wrong.

So the below is a quick write up on them.

AutoCasperNBI, AutoImagrNBI & El Capitan

Standard
Update 25/10/15: The post has been updated with my findings & explains the additions in AutoCasperNBI & AutoImagrNBI where applicable.

The Captain

On Wednesday Apple unleashed the 11th iteration of OS X, El Capitan.

This release has had a number of under the hood changes that have affected AutoCasperNBI & AutoImagrNBI, some like csrutil have been detailed here.  The two main issues can be found in greater detail below.

Now, don’t fret, these changes are not insurmountable. They just mean that neither AutoCasperNBI nor AutoImagrNBI will have 10.11 releases available for a few weeks.

This should be fine as there’s no urgency for 10.11 NBIs as, at the time of writing, all current Macs can boot to 10.10.

Updating Safari Extensions

Standard
Extension

As blogged here, here & here I’ve had some fun deploying & creating Safari Extensions.

Recently I needed to update our deployed Extension Bar & like a daft person I didn’t follow Apple’s advised Extension update method..

However, past me was not that daft & had already discovered that all that is needed to “update” an existing Extension is to replace it. Which is pretty much what the below script does.

Many thanks to Peter Bukowinski & Erik Berglund for helping me with this in the #bash channel in the macadmins Slack.

See below for the script

Faffing About With csrutil

At Apple’s recent event, the release date for the next release of OS X (El Capitan) was “leaked” in the above shown email.

Not only is this release going to be the most magical since the last one, it’s main focus seems to be on performance & security. The latter of which will affect us admins, especially System Integrity Protection (read: SIP).

This post will try to explain one way SIP may affect you, & possibly how to prepare.

OSX & AD Certificate Requests, some tips

Standard
Icon_CertificateStandard

If your environment is based around Active Directory, chances are you may leverage Active Directory Certificate Services (ADCS) as your internal public key infrastructure (PKI). The certificates from which may be used to authenticate clients to various services within your organisation.

As MacAdmins, we may need to configure our Macs to request certificates from our ADCS, below are some hopefully helpful tips that might make that easier.

Yet Another Sophos Enterprise Anti-Virus 9.2.x Post

Standard
Sophos Anti-Virus

Sophos’s Enterprise Anti-Virus 9.2.x has been blogged about a few times & in the Mac Admin space most prominently by Gilbert Palau & Rich Trouton, but here comes another tale & post on the same subject.

Our saga with Sophos Enterprise Anti-Virus 9.2.x started on Feb 27th, which incidentally was the day after they change their installed to an app bundle which Rich had blogged about & at the time Sophos did not have any deployment articles on.

So what did they change & why the pitchforks & stink eye from the Mac Admin community?
