Application icon changes via NSWorkspace.setIcon no longer being reflected in Notification Center in macOS 26.4+

Bit of a wordy title, but since macOS 26.4 the rebranding options in both Jamf Auto Update and Notifier have stopped working, at least as far as the icons being shown in Notification Center for notifications.

This post’s header comic nods to the fact that I’m not 100% sure that the way I have been using NSWorkspace’s setIcon to update an application’s icon (and then its notifications), is an Apple approved workflow or just a happy accident.

Notifications showing a prohibitory symbol after upgrading to macOS Monterey

After upgrading to macOS Monterey, you might see notifications like the above.

If so, the simple solution is to logout and then back in (or restart) or alternatively to restart the Notification Center via:

/usr/bin/killall NotificationCenter

This seems to correct things, without any deeper delving into the issue.

Many thanks for @nstrauss and @Tyler Sparr for mentioning this on the macadmins slack, and raising an issue for Notifier too.

Notifier

During lockdown we’ve been busy at dataJAR.

Not only was our website given a complete overhaul, but we also released Notifier.

Notifier is a Swift app which can post macOS alert or banner notifications on 10.10+ clients, & is what’s posted the notifications in the gif at the top of this post.

This project was originally intended for use with jamJAR, & jamJAR will soon have it’s wiki updated detailing the usage with Notifier.
