How To: Allow All Users To Add Or Remove Printers

Standard

Apples KB article on this, gives examples on how to add a network group or mobile account user to the lpadmin group.

If you simply wish each mac account to be a member of the lpadmin group, run the following:

sudo dseditgroup -o edit -n /Local/Default -a everyone -t group lpadmin

I’ve done this and it seems to work, but elevated privileges are still needed when installing a printer for me. “PrintUITool is trying to check for new Apple-provided software. Type an administrator’s name and password to allow this”. Do you know how to get around this slightly related issue?

Just ran into this with Mountain Lion. Missed it in Lion and no one complained. Here is what I did:

Change the following top two keys in /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.printuitool.agent.plist

    Disabled

    EnableTransactions

Thanks for replying Mike & Cashxx, completely missed these comments. (I blame my son arriving a few weeks before Mike posted).

I’ve yet to see this issue, but I deploy around 15 printer packages from Apple @ imaging.

Then a few more specialist ones.

Do you deploy printer drivers when imaging?
